Participants in the Fall 2014 session of Document Your Life Story will discuss various aspects of writing memoir and personal narrative. We will get to know one another better through the sharing of our own stories and will widen both our perspectives of the world and understanding of our places in it.
Classes will be a combination of craft and workshop. They will consist of short in-class readings, general discussions and writing assignments. Over the course of our three months together we will discuss basic components of writing including setting, imagery, scene and summary, story arcs and narrative and exposition. During the workshop portions of the class we will read one another’s work, looking for major themes and offering constructive feedback. We will also attend three of Saint Mary’s afternoon craft talks over the course of the term.
Students will receive optional writing prompts each week and by the end of the class they should have accumulated a number of essay drafts, which they may choose to revise and lengthen. All are welcome, regardless of experience.
